Chartiers Country Club was founded in 1924 by 400 charter members.  (The original name was the Chartiers Heights Country Club but "Heights" was taken out of the name in 1947)  Many of the charter members were former members of the Thornburg Country Club, a nine hole course located not far away in the Chartiers Valley.  These members were concerned about the infringement on their course by the Pennsylvania RR and tired of the constant flooding they experienced nearly every spring.

The original Chartiers CC clubhouse, costing $180,000 to build, was designed in the style of the English manor Tudor house by architect, Press Dowler..  Guest rooms were available on the third floor of the club for overnight stay.   Employees could stay in the dormitory rooms, also on the third floor. room.GIF (75619 bytes)

It took three years before the golf course became a reality in 1926.   Twice British Open Champion, Willie Park, designed the course, but two unsuccessful grass seed plantings costing $180,000 ($1,000,000 in today's dollars) delayed its grand opening. At left is Hole #10 (background) and #11 (foreground) looking from #14 in 1926.

The head Golf Professional for Chartiers Country Club from 1948 until 1967 was Bobby Cruickshank.  Born in Scotland,  he was only 5' 3" tall, but was the leading money winner on the PGA Tour in 1937.  He lost to Bobby Jones in a playoff at the 1923 U.S. Open, and still holds the Chartiers record low score of 63 (1952).  Here to the left he is pictured with Perry Como in a 1950's photo.

The golf course and the clubhouse have seen many renovations and improvements over the years.  Arthur Hills was commissioned in 1991 to develop a long range master plan for the golf course.  Over $800,000 was spent in 1992 to improve bunkers and tees.  Extensive renovations were made to the pool house in 1997 and a porch, used for outdoor dining in the summer, was enclosed and is now used for casual dining throughout the year.

membership.gif (15859 bytes) Chartiers Country Club has one of the largest memberships of any club in Western Pennsylvania, due mainly to the large social membership.  Permanent Golf membership, however, is limited to 300 so as to limit the play on the golf course.

That's a brief history of Chartiers Country Club.  The Club is solid financially, has a diverse and friendly membership, and is determined to remain one of the finest country clubs in Western Pennsylvania.

Note: Chartiers Country Club does not discriminate in its membership
policies with regard to age, sex, race, religion, or national origin.
